Jewel anemones and soft corals off Clare coastAlmost two years in the making, this is the first Irish Ocean wildlife series to be broadcast and is very unique in that it was predominantly filmed under water around Ireland. It brings us on a journey through the beautiful oceanic world encountering an enormous diversity of wild and colourful creatures. We meet playful dolphins, giant basking sharks and exotic jellyfish and travel into deep Atlantic via a robotic submarine to see the recently discovered cold-water coral reefs in Irish waters.

Greay seal pup off the Blasket IsalndsExplaining why our 'temperate's seas are so fertile, we follow the food chain from plankton right up to whales and dolphins, following the life stories of these creatures from breeding to birth and the continuous struggle for life.

The sea has always been a great provider for Irish people, from bestowing food and medicine, to the making of fields with seaweed on the previously barren Aran Islands.
We examine the changing nature of our relationship with the sea and it's creatures through the eyes of older fishermen and marine biologists.

Aran Islands currach fishermenThe first peoples who came to Ireland about 9,000 years ago were subsistence coastal folk and since then skills, tradition and lore have been developed and handed down through generations. Sadly many of these are now being lost as coastal communities decline, the series looks at these issues and the current state of our oceans, asking what the future may hold.

Farraigí na hÉireann was produced entirely in Ireland for TG4 by independent Irish production company Sea Fever Productions from Lahinch in Co. Clare.
