PROGRAMMES

Clár 1 - 'Ár bhFarraigí Teomheasartha' - Our temperate seas -
Tuesday Sept. 20th at 8pm

We explore and explain why the temperate seas around Ireland are some of the most fertile in the world looking at the abundance of creatures such as dolphins, basking sharks and jellyfish and explaining the ocean food chain beginning with plankton. We look at the history of man's chequered relationship with Basking Sharks.

Clár 2 - 'Grinneall na Farraige' - The Sea Bed
Tuesday Sept. 27th at 8pm

Explores the sea bed around Ireland. We see the enormous diversity of plant and marine life that has evolved here together over millions of years… Explaining why we have such an abundance of rich seaweeds, we see the creatures that they support from colourful soft corals to lobsters and crabs. We then journey out to the deep Atlantic with Dr. Anthony Grehan from NUIG who is leading the research into the recently discovered cold water coral reefs in Irish waters, filming these ancient and beautiful coral reefs 1,000 metres deep with a remotely operated vehicle.

Clár 3 - 'Uisce Tanaí an Chósta' - Coastal waters
Tuesday Oct. 4th at 8pm

Looks at the history of our inshore coastal waters. Viewed through the life experiences of retired currach fishermen Peadar Ó'Conghaile from Inis Oirr and Danny Sheehy from West Kerry, we see the changing nature of man's relationship using grey seals as the principal wildlife character and featuring dramatic behavioural sequences under and over water.
Seeking out fish of our shallow waters we encounter dogfish, pollack, flounder and wrasse with their highly complicated sex lives.

Clár 4 - 'Idir Thrá is Tuile' - Between the tides
Tuesday Oct. 11th at 8pm

As the tide draws back twice a day, people have the opportunity to explore the undersea world along the shore. Here only the hardiest of creatures can survive the dramatic change of living half their lives underwater and half above.
Irish temperate waters support an abundance of seaweeds, many of which have been traditionally used for medicine to Inis Oirr where almost all of the fields were created by man drawing seaweed and sand.

Clár 5 - 'Éanlaithe na Farraige' - Birds of the sea
Tuesday Oct. 18th at 8pm

Ireland's position in the North Atlantic has always made it a haven for sea birds, from passage migrants to resident species, we see a huge diversity of creatures. This programme looks at some of these species from puffins with their vibrant summer plumage to kittwakes, guillemots and controversial cormorants.
Following a family of grey herons from birth we witness dramatic and shocking behaviour as chicks battle with their siblings for food supply.

Clár 6 - 'Casadh na Taoide' - Tides of change
Tuesday Oct. 25th at 8pm

Over the last one hundred years the traditional way of life around our coast has changed beyond recognition. This film looks at the seas inherited by man in Ireland and examines what we've done with that legacy.
While the news is not good on many fronts, the future of our oceans will be decided on our willingness to embrace the need for change.
In this light, we examine our emotional relationship with the sea and look at some wonderful stories such as the conservation of whales and dolphins to illustrate how positive reactions can conserve our oceans.
